Innovation labs are a safe place for organizations to run experiments and iterate on projects, and they’re an important investment for firms that have rigid approaches or that work in highly regulated industries. But do they actually add value and generate growth? According to a report from Capgemini, the vast majority of innovation labs — up to 90%, one expert says — fail to deliver on their promise.

Luke Durcan, director EcoStruxure at Schneider Electric, is quick to point out the challenge of pointing to any specific time when the Lexington facility earned its smart status. The prospect of building a smart factory is “always a progression over time,” he said. “It’s not a one-shot-and-done kind of deal.”
Indeed, the roots of the smart factory stretch back decades, predating the widespread use of the term. The process of integrating various technologies and putting them under a single umbrella has emerged as a priority more recently. “You put it under [the smart factory] banner, and all of a sudden, people are a little bit more interested,” Durcan said. “And if it looks sexy, it’s easier to get the internal investment to make it work.”

Let’s start by clarifying what transformation means—and why transformation is so essential in the rapidly changing global economy. We will then explore why conventional approaches to transformation are both challenging and often ineffective. That will set the stage for discussing an alternative approach to transformation—scaling the edge—and why it can help address the challenges of transformation by tapping into two powerful forms of motivation: economics and emotions.

The industrial systems found in factories often have nothing to do with the systems that are known in IT. No REST API, no database (or few), and obviously no default message bus. However, it is necessary to be able to connect this small world together in order to collect data that will be used for analysis on Big Data or to do machine learning.

Transformation is another animal altogether. Unlike change management, it doesn’t focus on a few discrete, well-defined shifts, but rather on a portfolio of initiatives, which are interdependent or intersecting. More importantly, the overall goal of transformation is not just to execute a defined change — but to reinvent the organization and discover a new or revised business model based on a vision for the future.

From reading the headlines, it would be reasonable to have the misconception that automation was already in a rapid adoption phase – that is frankly not the case. While ubiquitous automation tools exist, like Surface Mount Assembly lines or Kuka robots assembling the body of cars, many would be surprised to learn just how many manual processes exist. For those of us in the space, the concept of Industry 4.0, where all of the machines will be connected together, is mythological: in many places, there aren’t even machines to connect.

Like many manufacturing processes, injection moulding (IM) could benefit considerably from automation. While the move towards offshoring work in the early 2000s impacted its adoption across Europe, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag is reporting a change in attitude and reversal in this trend, with a growing number of plastics processors embracing robotics to stay ahead of their competition.

Predictive maintenance aims to minimize unplanned downtime by using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to identify impending problems, so they can be addressed before they take effect.
While it’s a very attractive proposition, it’s crucial that manufacturers understand the dangers of getting it wrong. A false alarm triggered by inaccurate data can lead to incorrect actions and additional costs.

there is another technology which is predicted to drive industry 4.0 — assisted reality. This relatively new technology is having a particularly significant impact on industries with a heavy reliance on frontline and field-based workers, such as warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, aerospace and automotive. So, what is assisted reality? How does it compare to its more well-known cousin augmented reality? And how exactly is it being used in industry?

“The real hurdles to wider adoption of 3D printing in mass-produced autos and parts are cycle time, cost and sunk costs of the current stamping-, molding- and machining-based part formation processes. 3D printing has to get faster and costs have to come down considerably before we’ll see widespread, high-volume applications in the auto industry.”
Nevertheless, additive manufacturing development is underway in the auto industry.
